Xtreme Kap session in Paris
Blog - Kap Session

Flying a kite in Paris does not seem to be authorized but laws are very vague and the latest information from the Paris city hall dates back to 1948, so I took a chance.
I had two targets in mind :
The first one is from a pedestrian bridge La passerelle des Arts crossing the river Seine between the Institut de France and the Louvre Museum. According to my Google Earth scouting I could probably shoot L’île de la Cité, Le Louvre, St Germain.
The second one was from the Jardin des Tuileries and the idea was to attempt a ful 360 panorama of Le Louvre, Le Jardin des Tuileries, The Concorde and the Champs Elysés.
Wind conditions were Ok with a good North East wind but taking off in a urban environment is rather tricky and it took me a while to catch some clean air before putting the rig on the line.
I normally KAP with Heidy who brings to our KAP sessions some wisdom which refrains me to only take risks we can manage; however for these two KAP sessions I was by myself and took some calculated risks that I may have not normally taken. A Parisian Rendez vous with stress and adrenalin !
Flying a kite over the ocean or a lagoon is fun and risks are limited to the equipment, flying in a urban environment was a totally new experience for me and a totally different feeling : even with a complete pre-flight check list, the line can break, the kite can dive, the rig can fall and such incidents may have some catastrophic consequences… Nevertheless I decided to take my chance and I think it was worth it.
Two gendarmes came to ask me what I was doing, they were more curious about the pictures and did not mention anything about the regulation. In the Jardin des Tuileries, a security officer went to my rescue to help me rewind the line and bring the kite down as the wind was getting fairly strong for the delta.

Can’t wait to visit the Eiffel tower. Stephane Compoint a famous aerial balloon photographer shot some incredible images of the Tower that I doubt I can duplicate with a Kite.
